Public Relations

Gordon Hom

Hello, My name is Gordon Hom. I would like to first thank you for the opportunity to serve on the Board as your PR Manager. Next, I would like to thank Elyse for her dedicated service to TSNW and Club Sake. I have been with Club Sake for about a year, and it has been a great experience. I have never met such a wonderful and welcoming group of people as those with Club Sake. There is great camaraderie.

I am currently a real estate attorney with a major supermarket corporation. There is an expectation that attorneys have the “gift of gab,” and I can spin a good story. But as we see with the two Democratic presidential nominees, there can be talk, experience, or some of both. For PR experience, I was a co-founding member of Team Global Releaf, an adventure racing team affiliated with American Forests, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, to promote its reforestation and conservation efforts. PR and sponsorships were a part of my responsibilities. In addition to promoting the organization, the team and this new sport of adventure racing, I establish relationships with major corporations for equipment/gear, pro-deals, and monetary contributions.

My goal as PR Manager would be to work with the other Board members and the teams to continue building the strong relationship in the Club and with other teams. I would pursue building relationships with our communities to generate more interest in dragon boating. I would also seek to build relationships with businesses to be a team or race sponsor, general donations, and outfit teams through pro-deals.

Together, we can work on promoting Club Sake and the sport of dragon boating.

Secretary

Karin Carmignani

My name is Karin Carmignani, and I am running for the Board position of Secretary.

Although there is not the excitement and intrigue of the Obama/Clinton race—since I’m running unopposed—I do want to tell you a little bit about why I decided to run for this office and why I’ll do a great job in the position.

First off, I absolutely love the sport of dragon boating—the team camaraderie; the excitement of traveling to different venues to race; the racing (and sometimes winning of medals); the wonderful and interesting mix of people in Club Sake; the opportunity to race with other teams and get to know new people; and the wonderful friendships that have developed and extend beyond just paddling together... Because I love the sport so much and all it offers, I am always talking about it to people I meet (I just recruited someone at an Excel class I attended), and it’s why I wanted Group Health to have a dragon boat team: because I want everyone to have the chance to experience dragon boating and maybe get as much enjoyment and satisfaction from it as I do.

Club Sake is the foundation that provides the opportunity for people to try dragon boating, get hooked, and have many years of fun and new friendships. In addition to being the foundation, Club Sake is also the thread that ties us all together regardless of which specific Sake team that we happen to be on. Because I have reaped the many benefits of being a part of Club Sake, I decided to run for Secretary as a way to give back to the Club by contributing my skills and ideas to help it grow and continuously evolve in a way that meets the needs of its members and we all feel a part of something wonderful.

Since I support and facilitate several Board and quality committees as part of my job at Group Health where I am the Quality Program Manager, I am very good at organizing, coordinating, planning and facilitating meetings to keep them on track so that desired results are achieved. I look forward to supporting the Board’s functioning, but also to contributing my ideas and feedback as a team member of the Board to help the Club continue to grow and thrive.

I am requesting your support and your vote on March 4. Thank you.

Communications Manager

Dina Stark

Anita Steele

Dina Stark

My name is Dina Stark, and I have been a member of Club Sake for 5 years. Dragon boating has given me the opportunity to make great friends while doing something I love. I believe our goal as a team should be to communicate that passion to others and get people as excited about the sport of Dragon Boating as we are. I see great opportunity to use our website as a communication tool within the club as well as a vehicle to recruit people into the club.

While handling communication for Sakeccino for the past 5 years, I have learned about effective communication and, with the help of our webmaster Adam, strengthened and made Sakeccino communications more direct and helpful. www.sakeccino.com

  • I propose that we streamline communication to a weekly format that prompts our members to go to the website for information. Not only would e-mails be specific to the communication contact to each team, it would allow anyone to access announcements that were of interest to him or her.
  • I would like to establish a live calendar to track all club activities, so we have clear timelines and can plan appropriately. I would like the calendar to functionally enable people to sign up for events -- whether they are volunteer based or race based.
  • I suggest that we publish regular board minutes and updates so the broader club knows what the board leadership is working on.
  • I would like to establish a sub group with a representative from each team to get regular feedback and suggestions on how we can improve communications and operations within the club.
  • I also recommend changing the format of the club newsletters to be blog style, so teams could let the broader club know what they are doing on a more regular basis. The newsletter could include personal updates like it does now, but also what teams are doing to prevent injuries, refine techniques, fundraise, recruit, etc.

I strongly believe that all of our teams add great value to the club -- each with its own personalities, strengths and weaknesses. My mission as a board member would be to foster inclusiveness and leverage each team’s strengths. I hope by modernizing our communication vehicles we would enable all teams to be more active within the club and feel more informed and more involved.

Club Sake is very important to me, and I want to build better ways to communicate and share the passion for dragon boating and for our club. If you elect me as your Communications Manager, you can look forward to a more accessible, interactive and streamlined communication process.

Thank you very much for your vote. I very much look forward to serving the club.

Anita Steele

My name is Anita Steele, and I am running for the position of Communications Manager. I have been an active member of Club Sake since summer of 2005 paddling with Vintage Sake. I was a long time supporter of Team Sake prior to that. I’ve been the Treasurer/Communications chair for Vintage Sake since January of 2006. Besides keeping track of the funds for races, I distribute Club communications to the Vintage team in a timely manner, register the team for races and do race day team management. This includes keeping track of races, making sure everyone knows when and where to report and tracking other Club Sake teams race times to insure we can support them during their race.

As a member of the club, I’ve chaired the food committee for one of the Kent races, helped at the Club Sake booth at the Chinese New Year’s celebration, the U district street fair and the summertime International District fair. I was also co-chair of last year’s International Cancer Cup. In addition, when not racing with Vintage, I’ve joined other Sake teams to help fill out their boats when they were short paddlers. I have a real passion for dragon boating and this Club. I’m ready to pitch in at any time to get things done.

I have a strong history in volunteering. I’ve done everything from ushering at Husky games to cooking dinner for 100 homeless teenagers and everything else in between. One of my past roles was to serve as Membership Chair for the Washington Financial Aid Association for 3 years. I am the current Database Manager for the U of W Alumnae board where we have raised over $1 million dollars for full tuition scholarships.

As Communications Manager, I’d like to continue the Club Newsletter to promote club unity. I would also like to start a Club racing calendar so we know which teams are participating in which races and available paddlers to help fill teams when needed. I am very excited about serving the club in this capacity and will do everything in my power to see it succeed.

President

Matthew Goossen

  • Organize a paddle from Leschi through the Ballard Locks to a local destination such as Blake Island or Golden Gardens Park and back. A party could be held at the destination with family members/friends invited. This could be a lot of fun and great publicity for the club.
  • Have more involvement with other local clubs with races and practices by going to their practice place and paddling. The Sunday Paddle group just went to Lake Union and practiced and raced with TDBA Lake Union and had a wonderful time dodging float planes and seeing the new Lake Union park.
  • Work with Bill Traub, equipment manager, to develop a system to quickly tie up the boats with carabineers. Also label all club paddles with height and look into purchasing more paddles for the club of different height so that more people can use them and determine the right paddle length for themselves.
  • Check with Mount Baker Rowing Club for winter storage of dragon boats
  • Encourage more mini-races among the club teams.
  • Work with the communications manager to have a more dynamic Club Sake website so that results or news can be reflected instantaneously, more like a blog such as westseattleblog.com.
  • Keep the Sunday practices going and use them as outreach for new paddlers.
  • Develop more open practices for paddlers who can't make their regular paddler or just want to paddle more often. See if a summer Wednesday paddle would work or a winter Wednesday night paddle.
  • Seek input from members to continue to make Club Sake an enjoyable place to paddle and meet other people.
