Outrigger

In 2022, a group of 12 SAKE members presented the club with a gift of two 6-person outrigger canoes that formerly belonged to Sand Point Outrigger Canoe Club.  Club SAKE welcomes you to paddle traditional Hawaiian-designed outrigger canoes for 6 people.  Learn and prepare for both long-distance and sprint racing with a dedicated team and steersperson.

The sport of outrigger is steeped in tradition and a culture deeply rooted in respect for the spirits of the water and the canoe (wa'a), connection to nature, and nurturing of the relationships of the team, including the wa'a.  You will learn Hawaiian traditions and language as you learn the sport.

  • Club SAKE currently goes out twice per week, and is continuing to grow more sessions as interest builds.  Current sessions are Thursday nights at 6:30pm and Sundays at 9:00am and 12:00pm.
  • New to OC6 paddlers may try the sport out for free for the first 3 sessions.  Thereafter, membership is $140 per year and includes access to SUP, dragon boat, and kayak activities.
  • Sessions are approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.  Races and longer paddle sessions are scheduled quarterly.  Additional sessions are being planned.
  • Safety requirements:  Minimum of four paddlers, including kapena, is required to go out. PFDs must be worn at all times.  One member must carry a cell phone or radio in a waterproof case.  Paddlers must be knowledgeable and be able to demonstrate self-recovery in the event of a huli, either individually or assisted.
