Steering (Dragon Boat and OC6)

SAKE has defined requirements in order for members to be approved steerspeople for the dragon boats and the OC6.  All relevant documents for this specialty skill can be found in the Club Safety Documents on our website.

Those who become approved steers have generously given their time to train and their willingness to take on the responsibility of safety for training sessions.  Be sure you show your appreciation for the important roles that they have taken on so that we can all be out on the water safely.

Those who are approved steers have demonstrated the required skills, completed all testing, and submitted all documentation to the Safety Manager, who is the final authority on approval.

Steers-in-Training means that the person may not take a boat out unless there is also an approved steersperson on board to supervise them and be the lead for safety.  This will normally be because the person is still learning to steer.  It can also be that the steersperson has been exempted from or not completed the annual capsize drill requirement that is part of their approved status. In those cases, the person may still steer if there is an approved steer on board, in which case the approved steer is the safety lead.
